Books Worth Owning

What makes books worth owning?

It's definitely worth having your own personal library - and you may surprise yourself with how much you'll use it.

Even though it may seem that the world is at your fingertips with the internet, there is still a lot of value to be had in owning books - for reference, for pleasure, and to keep store of your growing store of knowledge.

To make the cut of books worth reading and keeping, I look for books that add value to my understanding of how the world works, or offers direction, or lets me know of new finding and resources available.

My Book Selection Criteria

In my view, the book has to accomplish at least one of these goals:

  • It needs to be a resource for information that I'll want to come back to again and again.
That includes things like good cookbooks, and other how to books.
  • It provides information that I may not need regularly, but that will be very useful when the need comes up.
That includes things like gardening advice, survival books, dictionaries, and a really good atlas or two.
  • It provides new information on evergreen topics, like leading edge health research
  • It offers new ideas or paradigms of thinking
  • It explains life in a new and interesting way
  • It captures a moment in history, or a fascinating person or culture
  • It's just plain gorgeous! Books of photos, or art deserve special attention.
We can never have enough beauty in our lives...

For the most part, I recommend hard copy books, rather than eBooks, but in some cases, it may well be worth while to have both version!  More details where appropriate...
